Student Health Insurance In Germany

I have dual citizenship in USA and Germany…questions!?
I’d like to go to a German university for my masters (in about 2 years.) I have not lived in Germany since I was a child, so I am very confused with almost everything.
How do I obtain health Insurance? Is it better to keep my Insurance in the US, or obtain student health Insurance through the institution?
What should I know about the university system?
Will having German citizenship be advantageous?
How do you transfer money from a bank in the US to an account in Germany?
Thanks! ![]()
I do have one German parent and one non-German parent. I already have German citizenship, that is not the issue.
I don’t speak German, as the course I want to take is primarily in English and allows students to take German lessons as well in the program.
Having German citizenship is certainly advantageous, as you won’t need to get a student visa and always have had the right to live, work and study in Germany. It does in fact allow you to do the same in almost all of Europe – as a German citizen, you are an EU citizen and under the “freedom of movement” rules, can do this anywhere in the European Union (language barriers permitting!)
It would be better to ask the university’s advice on health Insurance, as European countries are very different from the USA on this. Germans generally do not have health Insurance on the US model, and are covered under the national health system, the GKV. This will cost about €66 per month if you decide to choose it, or you can keep your US health Insurance if it will cover you whilst in Germany. Either way you need to provide the university with proof of what Insurance you have.
Transfer of money can be quite expensive, if only because currency exchange is involved, and you would have to ask your own bank how to do it, or even if it is possible at all. Germans generally are not keen on credit cards and electronic banking (I’ve bought things from Germans on ebay and often they don’t want to use Paypal).
