Can my girlfriend be charged with Grand Theft Auto for taking a car she paid for?
My girlfriend lives in Pennsylvania and bought a car last year with her own money. Somehow her father convinced her to get the title put under his name (something about lying to her that Insurance would be cheaper if it was in his name) instead of her own. Now she wants to move out here to California with me but her father refuses to change title over to her name. He also refuses to pay her for the car.
She’s insistent on taking the car anyway, but I am worried that she can be charged not only with Grand Theft Auto but transporting stolen good across state lines. What will happen if she takes it and what would be the ramifications of those actions?
Also if possible what can be done legally to get the title changed to her name without having to take her father to court?
It isn’t “grand theft auto” if it’s only one car. It really depends how far the father is willing to go, but he legally owns the car right now and can press charges.
